Art and Craft Activities Aren’t Just for Kids!

17/07/2018

Residential facilities that provide a varied range of activities ensure that residents can always find something they enjoy doing within the ever evolving lifestyle calendar. Participating in these group activities ensures a richer and more fulfilling day.

Activities that expand your environment also help maintain a positive outlook. Things like visiting the local shopping centre, a bus tour to the beach or lunch at the local pub can offer vital stimulation to residents and give them a fresh perspective on life.

Activities involving art and craft are also just as important…and our residents love a creative activity to busy themselves with. Providing them with welcome stimulation in a low-stress situation, the added health benefits are a bonus. When involved in crafting you are not only being creative but also using vital cognitive skills. For example, if you knit you are either following a pattern or creating a pattern of your own, and that’s not all you are doing! Research has shown that activities that involve crafting can reduce a person’s chance of developing mild cognitive impairment by as much as 30 to 50 percent.

Other benefits of craft are:

Therapy for those with dementia and Alzheimer’s as it can lessen feelings of anxiety and isolation. It can also bring back happy childhood memories of engaging in similar activities.

Combatting depression, as a simple activity such as painting, knitting, planting or woodwork can allow the brain to release dopamine, a feel-good natural anti-depressant.

A sense of purpose as the ability to complete a project can give a real sense of accomplishment. This can be especially important for elderly people who might feel as if they are no longer able to do things they could in their younger years.

Forming friendships and comradery through banter as you work. Finding people who share similar interests can bring feelings of togetherness. Low-key activities, like bingo, cooking, concerts and music sessions give residents the freedom to converse, interact and connect as they enjoy their surroundings.

Our lifestyle team work hard each month to bring a variety of quality activity to the facility calendars. Always open to feedback, we strive to offer something for all tastes and interests.
