Denise and Andre: It all started with a letter

On 29 March 2022, Denise and Andre Escriva celebrated their 70^th Wedding Anniversary. How they came to know each other is a remarkable love story!

In 1952 Andre Escriva was 24 years old and a soldier in the French Army serving in Vietnam. Andre found himself feeling envious of his army buddy, who received regular letters from his girlfriend. Andre asked if there was a friend who was willing to write to him as well.

In 1952 Denise Guichou was 21 years old and living in Prade. Andre was in luck, as Denise was the friend who was happy to be his pen pal. They began corresponding to each other, exchanging many letters and photos. They grew fond of the other and when Andre was posted back to France he took army leave and boarded a train to Prade where Denise and her mother would be  waiting at the  station to meet him in person for the very first time.

The train journey was arduous, taking over two days and despite Andre feeling a wonderful sense of anticipation and happiness he unfortunately fell so soundly asleep that he missed the Prade Station, and didn’t wake up until the train came to the very last stop!

Thinking she’d been stood-up, Denise promptly returned all of Andre’s photos and letters. He was so upset at what had happened that he made the journey all over again, taking the photos and letters with him, and cap in hand he presented himself with a heartfelt apology. Thank goodness he did as it was love at first sight when they finally met 10 days later! They were married shortly after and travelled around the world together as Andre continued his Army career.

Denise was a wonderful wife and they soon welcomed three children. They eventually settled in Australia and cherish the memories of their wedding day and all the years in between.
