When Wendy met Laurie on a blind date she knew he was a bit of a catch. At the age of 16, he was on his way to playing professional AFL for Collingwood as a centre half-forward, and already owned his own trucking business!
Laurie and Wendy were set up on a double date by mutual friends. They hit it off immediately, and Laurie asked Wendy if she wanted to drive with him from Adelaide to Melbourne in the truck to keep him company on the journey.
Wendy’s father was a police officer and she knew he’d never approve… so Wendy didn’t ask for his permission at all! Off to Melbourne they went and Laurie recalls Wendy wasn’t much help in keeping him entertained, she fell asleep not too far into the drive!
When Wendy didn’t arrive home later that night, her father was obviously concerned and quickly had the police out looking for her. They eventually tracked the teens down to Victoria…and Wendy’s father was not a happy camper!
Wendy and Laurie dated for about 12 months before they married (with Dad’s blessing) and have been together ever since.
Wendy knew from a young age that she wanted to be a nurse and ended up a triple certificate Registered Nurse, with one being for Midwifery. In his later years, Laurie made model planes and flew them. Not to do things by halves he became a South Australian champion for it too, receiving his ‘wings’ – which meant he was a top pilot.
Wendy states that they have moved to Infinite at Christies as they need more daily support. They are happy to still be together and their goal is to settle in and start the next chapter of their life together.
