Moves to Make Sense of the Aged Care Jargon

01/03/2017

The Federal Government’s ongoing review into aged care reform has quickly highlighted a clear lack of information available to older people wanting to enter, or already in, aged care.

Confusion and frustration is rife amongst those wanting to compare pricing, care quality and offered services of prospective care providers. This confusion is causing the elderly to lack confidence in their final choice.

The only real way to know what an aged care provider offers, and whether the service is satisfactory, is through hearing first-hand from residents, former residents or family members of residents. Such recounts have proved critical in the decision-making process, as often the information provided about a particular service has not stacked up against the reality of that service.

COTA (The Council On The Ageing Australia) claims that many consumers have stated that they felt unable to exercise significant choice and control over their aged care services, and many felt unsupported and uninformed when attempting to navigate a complex system.

In its submission to the government’s review of the aged care reforms, COTA said consumer feedback indicated a clear need for:

  1. first-hand information
  2. face-to-face support
  3. simple and clearly set out hard copy documents (as opposed to online information)
  4. up-to-date, accurate and comparable information
  5. access to clear and simple quality evaluations

“Only with a consumer demand driven system, will we see the necessary level of change to ensure consumers are supported how they wish, when they wish with what they wish,” COTA maintains.

A final review of the findings are due to be delivered on 1 August 2017.
