The internet and social media are proving to be a powerhouse in preventing loneliness and isolation within the aging population.
Social media use has traditionally been the stomping ground of a younger selfie-loving generation, but recent studies find that more than half of the older Australians using social media and the internet daily say they feel less isolated due to this connection.
PROVIDING VITAL CONNECTIONS
These tech savvy Aussie seniors are becoming proficient in using Facebook, Skype and Facetime and are loving this sense of connection to their children, grandchildren, old friends and their local community. Studies show that the internet has become an important portal for reducing isolation, loneliness and other depressive symptoms.
A VALUABLE MODERN RESOURCE
Whether researching information regarding health, accessing online support groups to connect with like-minded individuals or simply keeping up with world events, research shows that the internet has become an important way to exercise elderly minds. Using the internet as a support and educational tool has become ever more important as the population continues to age.
