We always love giving recognition where recognition is due, and one of our lovely volunteers at Caravonica Waters is most certainly deserving of a shout out!
Glynnis Kiernan, daughter of one of our Caravonica Waters residents named Rosie (pictured left), recently won an Australia Day Award for Volunteer of the Year. We are proud as punch to claim her as one of our own!
Tireless Devotion to Our Residents
Since we opened our doors at Caravonica Waters, Glynnis has spent two mornings a week in our home helping with activities. These activities encourage residents to stay active and connect socially. She supports our residents to sew, knit, paint, play bowls and join the weekly singalongs. She also helps with our regular art and craft stalls to help raise funds for additional resources for our residents.
An avid reader, Glynnis also helped establish our home’s library. Now home to a large collection of donated books and puzzles.
A Personal Sacrifice So Appreciated
During the height of COVID-19 restrictions, Glynnis chose to isolate herself from friends and family to ensure she could continue to support our residents. She was the only volunteer able to continue visit our home. She spent her time providing much needed companionship to residents while also assisting them to stay in contact with their loved ones via the use of our technology!
Giving Back to the Community
Arriving in Cairns 14 years ago, Glynnis started volunteering at St Vincent De Paul shortly thereafter, helping to attract donations. She and her Mum, Rosie, also hand make ‘cuddle pillows’ which are sold to raise funds for the charity. This tireless duo have made 250 cuddle pillows to date!
We Love Our Volunteers
We truly love our volunteers, they become a part of our extended family. The ‘good feels’ this act rewards all involved is priceless. So, if you have some spare time you are wanting to fill with ‘good feels’ we are always looking for the help!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts Glynnis, and congratulations on your award!
