Olive’s Story: Tea, Sugar and a Guiness World Record

One of our Infinite Care residents, Olive Traynor, took part in a truly special event at NSW Parliament House, officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest gathering of people aged 100 years and over.

More than 150 centenarians came together on Grandparents Day, comfortably surpassing the previous record of 70 people. With over 150,000 years of combined life experience in a single room, it was a day of quiet reflection and shared stories, where the focus remained on the comfort and celebration of these very special participants.

Olive and Beth represent Infinite Care

Now 102 years young, Olive attended the event alongside her daughter Beth, after being invited by the General Manager of Infinite Care Southhaven. Despite declaring herself “not a morning person”, Olive was up early, ready and waiting for her bus to Parliament House.

Beth recalls that as soon as they arrived, her mother’s personality quickly shone through.

“Mum loves a cup of tea, the more sugar the better. She was determined to have one before everyone else was served and managed to ask enough people, and attract enough attention, that she ended up with three cups of tea, all laced with sugar!”

Beth laughs as she shares, “Mum was a much-cherished only child. She’s very used to getting her own way,” chuckles Beth.

A shared achievement

With two 109-year-olds, and a 108-year-old who still lives independently attending the event – and even stepping onto the bus unaided, Beth says spirits were high from the very beginning. Guests were welcomed by a live band and entertained by a school choir once everyone was comfortably seated.

This Guinness World Record truly belongs to all the people who attended – the centenarians themselves, the families who supported them, and the team members who ensure the daily wellbeing of our elderly treasures. Infinite Care is proud to have played a part in a project event that highlights the enduring value of our senior citizens.

The secret to Olive’s longevity

Olive grew up in Annandale and trained as a seamstress. She preferred buying clothes and tailoring them rather than making them from scratch, although she did make her daughter’s wedding dress. Olive spent most of her working life as a finisher, completing final checks and quality control on garments before they were sent out. She also spent several years sewing beading onto evening wear.

Beth fondly recalls the story of a wedding gown her mother once beaded all over with crystals so sharp they continuously cut through the thread. Olive had to work out the exact amount of thread needed to ensure it was strong enough to hold, all while imagining the crystals falling from the gown as the bride walked down the aisle.

When asked about her secret to a long life, Olive shares that she never smoked and only drank alcohol occasionally. She does, however, have a lifelong love of sugar, butter and chocolate.

“Mum always used to say you need plenty of butter to grease your insides,” Beth recalls, and maybe that is her secret to longevity.
